Verified Reviewer |Anthem denied my claim against the doctor who neglected me
On June 30, I received a response from DMHS saying that because my insurance is provided through an employer, they would have no power to overturn their decision. I was informed to contact HCA (Health Consumer Alliance) to hire an advocate who can possibly help me with...
I have received a letter in the mail confirming that my appeal was denied.
I filed a claim against my doctor back around late March this year because my doctor neglected to properly evaluate my lab work results. This resulted in inappropriate treatments, such as blood pressure medication that actually worsened my condition and was ignored by my provider when reported.
The side effects of the medication, such as hot flashes, forced me to take time out of work, pay out-of-pocket expenses from additional providers to correct his mistakes, and overall physical and emotional distress. It was not until I decided to get a second opinion that I discovered that my lab work was flagged and overlooked that my cortisol levels were reportedly low. Keep in mind that the lab work was completed 4 months prior, that my doctor indicated to me over the phone that they were healthy, and that a follow-up appointment would not have been necessary. So it took me 4 months to realize that I was receiving inappropriate treatment.
When I tried to come back to my original provider to follow up on his lab work, he turned me away.
I felt completely betrayed. When I asked my doctor's clinic to please drop the remaining balance on my copay, because he neglected my health, they told me that it was the patient's responsibility to remind the doctor to reevaluate their results, because of their patient volume. Supposedly they said they would agree to drop the charges and request to drop them, but they never followed through.
After filing my complaint, I was told to wait 60 days, from the date that they receive the claim in the mail to make their final decision on my case. After 60 days were completed, I was told that my claim was denied.
It was denied simply because they did not agree with my appeal or the reasoning behind it. I feel like I have been failed by both my doctors and insurance, despite the mountains of evidence that I provided. I provided voicemail, emails, photographs of injuries resulting from the inappropriately prescribed medication, testimonials of my doctor's past behaviors, bills that specifically resulted from his negligence, and the labwork that had to be handed to me by another provider.
I ultimately decided that my last resort really is to go to DMHS to escalate my claim so my remaining copay for the substandard service I received does not get sent to collections. At this point, they are really my only hope of receiving justice.
I feel completely abandoned and my trust in medical providers has been severely damaged.
I cannot afford to gamble my health with any doctor ever again.
This tragedy has taught me that if my doctor makes a critical mistake while I am under their care, I am ultimately responsible for their neglect. My insurance actively condones the negligence of my provider.
On the side note, the symptoms I was trying to treat under my original provider, I would later soon discover were symptoms of cancer, which were diagnosed by a more competent and responsible provider.
- Access to basic care
- Expedited waiting times are still 30 calendar days
- Large remaining copay balance
- Long waiting times
Preferred solution: Apology
User's recommendation: When you are under Anthem Blue Cross or Blue Shield insurance, it is your responsibility as the patient to manage your doctor's mistakes. Your insurance will proudly not cover payment for negligent services.
